    Home water storage

Another way to add water storage at home is to use 2 liter bottles. Wash in hot soapy water when finished, add a few drops of bleach then fill with tap water. These should be kept in a cool dry place and will last for years before you have to rotate it back out. I have almost 100 bottles.

I also store them in the bottom of a freezer to add mass and keep the freezer cooler for a longer period of time. In a long term outage (more than 24 hours) I take a bottom and set it on its side near the top of the freezer and when I come back later to check the freezer I can see if the water in the bottle melted and refroze because the bubble will be on its side instead of the top.

you may notice rice in my freezer, I store it there for 2 weeks at -20 before I pack it in mylar to kill anything that may be riding along.

Randy, I do almost the same thing. Sense we are now in town and the city water has chlorine I do not add the bleach and write the date on in. They should be good for 6 months. Maybe I should start adding the bleach so they will keep even longer.
